Alibaug is a coastal town and a municipal council in Raigad District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. It is the headquarters of the Raigad district.
Alibag was developed in the 17th century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre the naval chief of King Shivaji’s Kingdom. Raigad’s first name was “Kulaba”. Today’s Ramnath was the main village. A Bene Israelite named Ali used to live there at that time. A rich man he was who owned many mango and coconut plantations in his gardens. Hence, the locals used to call the place “Alichi Bagh” meaning “Gardens of Ali”, or simply “Alibag”, and hence the name stuck.

· 18Magnetic Observatory
The Alibag Magnetic Observatory was established in the year 1904 and is one of a few British establishments that can be found here. What makes it very unique is that not only is it the only kind in Asia, but one of only 13 such observatories in the world. It provides geo-magnetic data and has been among the foremost magnetic observatories in the world.
The observatory has 2 buildings. The first building has magnetometers that record geomagnetic field change while the second has precision recording instruments that provide data with geomagnetic storms.
Location: The observatory is located close to Alibag beach and is ideal for visits between the months of November to February.
Time for Visit: The observatory can be visited on working hours but you will require special permission from officers in the observatory.
